Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
